Materials/Mechanical Laboratory Technician
  
Job Responsibilities

Creare seeks a technically talented Materials/Mechanical Laboratory Technician to support engineering research and development projects with lab assembly, materials processing, and data collection skills.  Primary activities include:

  • basic mechanical design;
  • machining and detailed mechanical fabrication, such as fabricating/assembling fixtures or intricate test assemblies;
  • wiring laboratory sensors, heaters, controls, and computer interfaces;
  • occasional small-scale work (e.g., solvent cleaning, chemical etching) with hazardous chemicals in a fume hood;
  • assembly, testing, and operation of custom lab apparatus associated with vacuum technology, thin film deposition (sputtering), chemical processing, heat/fluid transfer, high pressure gases, cryogenic fluids, controlled atmospheres, and materials processing;
  • conducting tests and experiments (under the direction of others) using the above equipment and technologies towards the development of novel materials, materials processing approaches, prototype devices, and technologies.
Professional Requirements

An ideal candidate would possess an Associate’s degree in natural science (e.g., physics, materials science, chemistry) or a Bachelor’s degree from a technical training or natural science program and have skills and prior experience with the following:  High quality basic machining skills (drilling, milling, lathe, tapping, etc.). Good mechanical assembly skills on a relatively small-scale (sensor installation, wiring, microscope work, materials inspection, model building). Basic electronics and understanding of basic wiring standards. Good basic math and units skills (algebra, trigonometry, geometry, metric/English units). Self-motivation and the ability to work independently or collaboratively as needed. Ability to understand and follow detailed instructions. Good organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multi-task and appropriately prioritize competing demands in a dynamic environment is necessary. Additional desired skills but not required are familiarity with basic chemistry and basic wet chemistry practices; familiarity with Word, Excel, SolidWorks CAD software; and experience with safe handling of hazardous materials.
