POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Repairs and maintains machines, mechanical equipment, and buildings and works on plumbing, electrical, and air-conditioning and heating systems. Builds partitions, makes plaster or drywall repairs, and fixes or paints roofs, windows, doors, floors, woodwork, and other parts of building structures. Maintains and repairs specialized equipment and machinery of various types.

Inspects and diagnoses problems to determine the best way to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogs. Determines required supplies and repair parts and procures needed items through proper distribution channels. Using common hand and power tools such as screwdrivers, saws, drills, wrenches, and hammers, as well as specialized equipment and electronic testing devices, replace or fix worn or broken parts, where necessary, or make adjustments to correct malfunctioning equipment and machines.

Performs routine preventive maintenance to ensure that machines continue to run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, and the physical condition of buildings do not deteriorate. May follow a checklist to inspect drives, motors, and belts, check fluid levels, replace filters, and perform other maintenance actions. Maintains records of work if required.

Applies technical knowledge to solve complex problems. Work will be reviewed by higher level technician or supervisor for compliance with accepted practices and work assignments. May provide technical guidance to lower level technicians. May be assigned other duties within his or her capabilities. Applicant selected may be subject to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Must have demonstrated satisfactory skills and good performance in the field of facilities maintenance to include: the repair and maintenance of machines, mechanical equipment, plumbing, electrical, and air-conditioning and heating systems (HVAC). Must have two years progressive experience as a general maintenance worker and have graduated from a two-year resident course at a vocational institute or a recognized apprenticeship program or a total of five years progressive experience in the specific field.

Work will include cross-utilization into these and other jobs as required. May require some overtime and weekend work.
